8.5.4. Adjustment of the steering mechanism

1. Remove the steering mechanism (see. "Replacement of the steering mechanism").
2. Fix the steering mechanism in a vice so that delivery and drain openings (openings under the union) were below.

3. Merge oil from the mechanism, turning a hand a rotor of 34 (fig. 8.3) or a shaft zolotnik of 31 (fig. 8.4).

4. Press a hand a rotor or a shaft zolotnik along an axis and shake a bipod 25 (see fig. 8.3) or 29 (see fig. 8.4). If at the same time axial movement of a rotor or shaft zolotnik is felt, it is necessary to adjust a tightness of persistent bearings 4 and 11 (see fig. 8.3) or 3 and 10 (see fig. 8.4).
5. For adjustment of persistent bearings to small beards and the hammer correct a fillet of a glass 3 (see fig. 8.3) or an adjusting nut 1 (see fig. 8.4), zakernenny in case wall grooves.

Prevention
Try not to strike excessively strong blows.

6. Eliminate a gap, turning a glass or a nut clockwise.
7. Check the moment of a provorachivaniye of a rotor or shaft zolotnik in persistent bearings, he has to be 2 N · m (0,2 kgfs · м).
8. If on average the provision of a shaft of a bipod when rocking for a bipod the gap is felt, adjust gear gearing for what turn off a nut 26 (see fig. 8.3) or 30 (see fig. 8.4) and remove a bipod.
9. Remove top and lower 27 and 33 (see fig. 8.3) or 22 and 19 (see fig. 8.4) protective covers.
10. Remove lock rings 28 (see fig. 8.3) and adjusting washers 29. Weaken an inhaling of lock-nuts 25 (see fig. 8.4) and turn off lock bolts 26 on two-three turns.
11. Straighten adjusting washers 29 (see fig. 8.3).
12. Turning at the same time support 30 (see fig. 8.3) or 27 (see fig. 8.4) a bipod shaft counterclockwise (if to take a detached view the shlitsevy end of a shaft of a bipod), eliminate a gap in gearing. You carry out adjustment in the provision of a shaft of a bipod corresponding to average position of the gear sector.
13. Check the bipod shaft provorachivaniye moment, it has to be within 35–45 N · m (3,5–4,5 kgfs · l) upon transition through average situation.

Note
If after adjustment of a tightness of bearings the gap in gear gearing does not manage to be eliminated, so the gap is caused by wear of ball transfer. In this case the steering mechanism is subject to repair in a specialized workshop.

14. Establish adjusting washers 29 (see fig. 8.3) and lock rings 28, bend one of short moustaches in both adjusting washers in a bipod shaft support groove.
15. Wrap lock bolts 26 (see fig. 8.4) and lock-nuts the 25th moment of 8-10 N · m (0,8–1,0 kgfs · м).
16. Establish details as it should be, the return to removal.
17. Remove air from system of the hydraulic booster of steering (see. "Pumping of system of the hydraulic booster of steering").
